From Cup of Excellence.

Mulugeta Muntasha is a supplier and has been in the coffee industry for 15 years. He works with about 100 farmers in Bursa kebele, Arbegona woreda in Arbe Guna zone of Sidama region and produces the 74112 variety of coffee. Farming at an altitude of 2500 meters above sea level the farmers practices organic farming. Annually, Mulugeta collects ripe red cherries from the farmers, which amounts to a total of 120,000 kilograms. The coffee is then sun-dried on raised beds and processed into natural coffee. He then sells the coffee to exporters but Mulugeta does not feel that the farmers get a fair price considering the extensive labor they apply. “I believe our high score in this competition will help to promote our coffee. We are excited to be on the winners' list of the Cup of Excellence Ethiopia 2021” he said.

Legesse Botasa Dikale

Winning coffee grower Legesse Botasa Dikale. The top-scoring coffee in the 2022 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence (CoE) fetched $400.50 per pound during a public auction last week, breaking the record for the highest price ever paid for a CoE-winning green coffee. Half of the 1,058-pound lot of coffee, grown by farmer Legesse Botasa Dikale in Ethiopia’s renowned Sidama region, was purchased by Chinese company LNK Coffee Trading. The other half of the natural-process lot was purchased for $400 per pound by Saza Coffee in Japan and Orsir Coffee in Taiwan.

Muluneh Tute Galcho

Muluneh, 44, is a father of five children. He processes Natural coffee on 0.33Ha of farm in Bursa Kebele, Arbegona Woreda of Sidama region. He grows a 74158 coffee variety. He heard about COE from his friends and entered the competition this year for the first time. He is very excited that he made it to the top 40. He has been in the coffee business for 16 years.

Tilahune Horsa Fata

Tilahun, 54, is a father of six and owns 0.608 Ha coffee farm in Sedaware Kebele, Bensa woreda, Sidama region. He grows 74167 coffee variety processes into dry-natural coffee. Responding to what drew him to COE, he said, “I know people who benefited from the competition, and I wanted to be part of it to increase my production and improve quality”. He is thrilled as he didn’t expect to make it to the top 40 and believes it was God’s will that got him here.

Alema Shalo Gocha

Alem is a 65-year-old widow and a mother of 10 children. She owns 10.2506Ha of land in Adame Kebele, Yirgachefe woreda, Gedio Zone of the SNNP region. She grows 74158 coffee variety and processes Natural coffee. She entered her coffee in the COE competition after she heard about it on the news. Though she didn’t win last time, this is her second entry in COE. “I am excited that I made it to the top 40,” she says. “I am planning to expand my farm and modernize it,” she adds.
